Twitter is the new darling of web 2.0 and it’s attracting potential investors like flies to a ripe cowpat. The list of interest companies has now grown to include Facebook, Google and, most surprisingly, Apple. That’s according to the Silicon Valley gossips at TechCrunch anyway.

Allegedly, Apple is in “late stage negotiations” which means that all the tea and Wagon Wheels have run out and it’s time to slap a big bag of cash on the table. Apparently, Apple is offering a hefty $700 million for the surging social networking tool. The idea would be to finalise negotiations in the next few weeks and make a big announcement at WWDC in June.

So Twitter’s founders would walk away, pockets loaded with booty and Apple would control the 3rd largest (and climbing) social network in the world. But what would that mean to the Apple using community? Good question. If Apple did sink that much money into, we’d expect a significant increase in the amount of Twitter integration with its current devices.

That could mean a dramatic overhaul of the iPhone front page to provide continuous updates from the Twitter community. It could result in OS X backgrounds being swapped for a live Twitter feed. But then again, why bother? There’s already a metric ton of Twitter apps available for iPhone and for every other type of handheld or operating system you can imagine. That’s pretty much how it became this popular in the first place; although it wouldn’t hurt for it to become even more accessible, it hardly what you’d call $700m necessary.

Furthermore, there doesn’t seem to be any way in which Apple to could recover its investment. Twitter has yet to find any way of monetising its massive popularity, unless it suddenly started charging for tweets of course.

We’re thinking of calling bullshit on this one, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground, just in case El Jobso’s next ‘One more thing’ is: We’ve bought Twitter.
